Bayer Leverkusen crowned historic season with DFB-Pokal triumph

Leverkusen won the DFB-Pokal for the first time in their history on Saturday after a thrilling 3-2 extra-time victory over 1. FC Kaiserslautern at the RheinEnergieStadion. Leon Bailey gave Bayer Leverkusen the lead ten minutes before the break, only for Kaiserslautern to level in the second half. Kevin Volland scored a second for the Werkself but the Red Devils again pegged them back. With ten minutes of normal time remaining and the scores deadlocked at 2-2, Leverkusen defender Odilon Kossounou was shown a straight red card, giving Kaiserslautern a numerical advantage for the rest of the match. But Bayer Leverkusen dug deep and won the game in extra-time, with substitute Lucas Alario grabbing the winner. The victory capped a historic season for Leverkusen, who also won the UEFA Europa League earlier this month and became the first German team to win both trophies in the same season.
